KAWA.ÉE

At the Áak'w Kwáan Cultural Revitalization Initiative, we take pride in preserving the accurate history and cultural heritage of our people. Unfortunately, many records have perpetuated inaccuracies about our ancestors. One such example is the story of Kawa.ée, often credited as an Aak'w Chief who showed Joe Juneau and Richard Harris gold. However, our oral history contradicts this account, revealing that Kowee was actually a Chief of Police from the Young's Bay area (territory of the Hutznawu on Admiralty Island), not from our region. He was likely married to Ok-Lak, an Eagle clan woman from an Auk Village 16 miles north of present-day Juneau.
