I graduated from the University of Michigan with a BA in Criminal Justice and Minor in History. I am Áak’w Kwáan and my Tlingit name is: Aan shaawaatki. I am Yaxté Taan from the Yaxté Hít (the Big Dipper House). I'm the daughter of Grace Canul and the granddaughter of Bessie Visaya and James Miller (Wooshkeetaan). I have two daughters and one granddaughter. Our family are also the great-great grandchildren of Chief Katlian of Sitka ( Kiks.ádi) who fought in the war of 1802 and again in 1804 against the Russians.
I have extensive experience in accounting and started my own business as a Court Visitor for the Alaska Court System. I also helped to start the Áak’w Kwáan non-profit to benefit the inherent, indigenous Áak’w Kwáan of the Juneau-Douglas territory. Land of the Áak’w. I'm also one of the the historians and a researcher of our history and business manager for the Áak’w Kwáan Coalition Council.
