Janine Canaul graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice and a minor in History. She is Áak’w Kwáan, and her Tlingit name is Aan shaawaatki. She hails from the Yaxté Hít (the Big Dipper House) as Yaxté Taan.
Janine is the daughter of Grace Canul and the granddaughter of Bessie Visaya and James Miller (Wooshkeetaan). Janine's family has a rich heritage, being the great-great-grandchildren of Chief Katlian of Sitka (Kiks.ádi), who fought in the war of 1802 and again in 1804 against the Russians. She has two daughters and one granddaughter.
With extensive experience in accounting, Janine started her own business as a Court Visitor for the Alaska Court System. She also played a key role in establishing the Áak’w Kwáan non-profit organization, dedicated to benefiting the inherent, indigenous Áak’w Kwáan of the Juneau-Douglas territory. Land of the Áak’w. In addition, Janine serves as one of the historians and researchers for our history, as well as business manager for the Áak’w Kwáan Coalition Council.
